Well after 5 or 6 spots of rain last week I got a call from Angus Adam to say Kingborough Oval was under water and unusable for the week’s game. This started a chain reaction that had us pulling all stops out to get a game going at home. Working with Kerry at the Sorell Council it was decided that the back oval at Pembroke Park would be playable on the day.
Thanks again to all the Sorell people who helped at short notice to fill all the necessary positions to ensure the day went reasonably smoothly and thanks also to the Kingborough players and supporters for patronising our canteen and bar.
Now down to the footy.
On a day that could have been a winner for us we unfortunately, went down in all three grades. The Colts 35 point loss didn’t have a lot of excitement but young Jonesy was the best on field for the Eagles abely assisted by Flynny, Macca, Jac and Chappy . Lloyd Batchelor was our only multiple goal scorer with 2 while Pearsy and Johno got one each.
Luke's Reserves boys put up a good fight in terrible conditions with Shaun Robertson the standout performer for the team. Bobby Keefe seemed to revel in the mud ( probably thinking back to his childhood days ) whilst Alex,Belg and Banger worked hard all day. Micky Craik had another great game as he slowly gets back into the swing of things. This game only saw one multiple goal scorer for the Eagles ( Bobby Keefe 2 ) but a positive sign was that there were 9 other goal scorers for us showing we have more lines of attack that the current Swine Flu threat.
The first two games gave the oval a fair pounding and when it came time for Ackers and his boys to perform it was going to be very heavy going. Once again we were caught off guard at the start of the game going into the first break down by 34points. Trying hard all day was the Wombat who booted 5 goals Bents and Ackers got 3 a piece and Hurls and Speedy chipped in with 1 each.
Big Mowser once again played a magnificent game whilst Nuggy Kaine showed flashes of brilliance. Bents and Wombat were deservedly among our best players as were nick Grubb and Spaz Howard.
Hopefully this week’s game will have better results for all three grades and I’m sure Brimma will be praying to the weather gods to hold off on the rain so we can get back on the main Oval.
Up and coming functions for the club include a 60’s,70’s & 80’s theme night tonight.
Our Ladies night on the 25th July and Band night on 22nd. August
